Your Chance to Have your Say

Ringmer Village Action Plan

by Pauline Lewis

If you live in Ringmer, you will have received a questionnaire at the beginning of this year. Thank you to everyone who completed and returned their copy.
There is more to a Village Plan than collecting responses to a questionnaire.
We hope you will want to continue to be involved - or to join in now if you haven't done so yet.

If you want to know more …….

Ringmer Village Action Plan. Progress to date

A questionnaire was produced as a co-operative project between community organisations and individuals and the parish council. The objective of this stage was to get an idea of some of the thoughts, feelings, needs and hopes of Ringmer people. Over 1800 copies of this questionnaires were distributed to all Ringmer households in January.

770 (just under 43%) were returned. The report of the responses, produced by a professional analyst, is now available for community examination on this website. Paper copies are available for inspection at the following locations:-

Primary School, Community College, Library, St Mary's Church, Baptist Church, Parish Council Office, Village Hall, Jack & Jill's Bakery, Doctor's Surgery (tbc), Dental surgery, Harper & Eede, Broyle Community Association (Bren Bonner).

What happens next ?

We hope as many people as possible who live or work in Ringmer will take time to reflect on the findings of the report. Please try to develop your ideas of what for you are the main priorities for what we should do next.

A steering group drawn from the community is currently in the process of planning a public consultation event (probably in the late spring). We hope this event will provide the opportunity to start the production of an action plan.

What does an Action Plan look like ?

There is no standard format. However, it is useful to see what other villages have done. Often an action plan takes the form of a list of twenty or so different actions. Each action should include:-

  • a description of the action
  • how it will be carried out
  • who will be responsible for doing it
  • when it should be completed by.

A little background information

What is a Village / Parish Plan ?

Parish Plans are part of the "Vital Villages" scheme being run by the Countryside Agency.
The concept of Parish and Town Plans was launched in the Rural White Paper in November 2000.
The Plan should:-

  • set out a vision of what is important for the community in the future.
  • set out problems that need to be tackled.
  • look at how the design and quality of new development should fit in with and preserve values local features.
  • identify key facilities, services and actions needed to safeguard the distinctive character and features of the village community.

What can Village / Parish Plans achieve ?

Parish Plans highlight common interests, concerns and needs within the village population.
From this:-
Groups of interested people may be able to organise some things directly themselves.
Further research into funding sources may be necessary to achieve some goals.
Evidence gathered from questionnaire responses can provide important evidence of local need to back up grant applications.
Evidence gathered from questionnaire responses can be used to back up village interests in discussions with other bodies e.g. District and County Councils
